I sat down with Kyle and Brent Pease, fresh off their incredible performance at the 2024 IRONMAN World Championships in Kona. Through both their own efforts and the Kyle Pease Foundation, they’re redefining what's possible in endurance sports and inclusion.
In the episode, we covered:
Their journey from Kyle asking "Can people in wheelchairs do IRONMAN?" to breaking records in Kona
How they improved their IRONMAN World Championship time six years later - primarily through emotional maturity and their evolution from focusing purely on competition to finding moments of gratitude even in intense challenges
The Kyle Pease Foundation's growth from helping people race to creating employment opportunities and building vibrant community
Why the shift from seeking inspiration to fostering genuine inclusion matters
The power of breaking down overwhelming challenges into manageable pieces
Atlanta's role in their story and why it's the perfect home for their mission
My Reflections:
This episode gave me everything I expected and plenty that I didn't. I expected to be inspired by Kyle and Brent’s example to chase audacious goals and overcome barriers. I expected them to show how inclusivity and service can transform individual lives and entire communities, and how two people can turn their own journey into a movement that creates opportunities for others.
What I wasn't expecting was a masterclass in mindsets and perspectives. These guys are improving their performance as they reach their 40s, and they credit it to emotional maturity and a focus on what matters most. They're deliberately cultivating gratitude for the journey - even as they're doing extremely hard things.
Kyle and Brent remind me that there is plenty in life that we don't control, but building the ability to consciously choose optimism, gratitude, and to take on and meet challenges helps us grow our capacity beyond what we thought was possible.
Great stuff, Brent. Love these guys and the inspiration they provide to all of us. Keep ‘em coming.
