Episode overview & reflections:
Dr. Tony Sundermeier, Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, shares insights from his journey contemplating technology’s role in our lives and integrating AI into his own ministry, including using it as a "conversation partner" for sermon preparation and experimenting with AI-generated liturgy.
Dr. Sundermeier offers two differing lenses for understanding technology through contrasting Biblical stories. Is technology like the Tower of Babel - where human technological ambition becomes destructive pride? Or does it fulfill Jesus’ promise that “nothing will be impossible for you” and enable the pursuit of a full life?
I perceive a major need for institutions to help make meaning and navigate ethical complexities. The church should strive to be a moral lighthouse that helps us survive the 21st century and thrive into the 22nd century.
Finally, I believe we have to keep Jesus’ promise of “life to the full” squarely in mind. We have tools of unprecedented power to help us achieve our objectives. The question is whether we can use them wisely towards worthwhile ends.
Dr. Sundermeier suggests two questions for evaluating the use of any technology. Does it glorify God? Does it promote genuine human flourishing?
This is a vital topic for us to continue analyzing as technology moves faster and with more promise. Please enjoy the episode and let me know what you think!
🧠 Big Question:
In a world where AI is reshaping our lives, what role should the church play in guiding us forward?
💡 Bold Idea:
Merging with technology could actually be part of God’s vision for humanity - a relatively radical consideration.
🎯 Better Living
Technology should be utilized as a tool that helps us pursue an abundant life - it’s still up to define what ‘abundant life’ entails and seek it faithfully!
